Online course on „Exploring Structural Database Use in Crystallography”

FIZ Karlsruhe will participate in the online workshop "Exploring Structural Database Use in Crystallography: A USNC/Cr Workshop Series", which will cover various crystallographic databases and other topics. The workshop will take place online over several weeks, with two sessions on ICSD on 23 and 24 March. For more information and to register for free for this event, visit the official website:

In this 2 part tutorial, we will give a detailed overview of the search masks in ICSD and explain tips and tricks on how to best use them. We will also give an overview of the different ways to search in ICSD - from simple searches to more complex searches with the tools for combining searches in ICSD or with the "Expert Search" command line tool.
The tutorial session will include some questions that participants can work on using the ICSD. We will be around to give tips or further help if needed. Of course, we will also be happy to help with problems posed by participants. Both parts are designed for beginners, but will also include some advanced tips and tricks for more familiar users of the database. There will also be plenty of time to ask questions about your specific challenges.

You want to know more about the content of ICSD?

Modern research depends on finding high quality data. The ICSD stands for a long-term tradition in collecting and curating inorganic crystallographic data. The data you find in ICSD goes back to the very beginning of x-ray diffraction analysis and has been extended ever since the first release of the database more than 30 years ago.

If you are interested in how data curation for the ICSD looks like and what we are doing to make sure to be able to offer a comprehensive database with high quality, value-added data, please join us for the special session of the 25th IUCr congress ‚Exemplary practice in chemical, biological and materials database archiving‘, where Dr. Annett Steudel explains the details of data collection, processing and curation in her presentation: Behind the scenes – data processing and quality assurance for the ICSD. The session takes place virtually on August 16th, 2021, 14:45-17:10.

Depositing, searching and visualising organic, metal-organic and inorganic structures

We are pleased to announce another joint event of ICSD and CSD taking place virtually on August 12th.

This joint workshop will give you the the opportunity to learn about both structural databases and the joint depot. You will have the opportunity to learn how to deposit your structures in the depot and to search, visualise and learn from data.

The sessions are designed for beginners and will include some advanced tips and tricks for more familiar users of the databases. Of course, there will also be plenty of time to ask questions about your specific challenges in using the three tools.

Be sure to sign up fast are there is a maximum capacity of 150 participants.

•     9:00-10:30 - Session One: Depositing and publishing data through the CSD and the ICSD
•     11:00-12:30 - Session Two: Searching and visualising metal-organic structures in the CSD
•     13:30-15:00 - Session Three: Searching and visualising inorganic data in the ICSD

What is the next step?

A second joint interactive session is planned for October 7th, where we will discuss your requirements and priorities for a common interface that will enable advanced searches and other services across both databases. The joint interactive session is planned as an open, guided discussion to gather your requirements and identify some use cases that will help us prioritize the development of the required functionality.

Since mid-2018, the CCDC and FIZ Karlsruhe have been offering the crystallographic community a joint depot, which standardizes the deposit of crystal structures for inorganic and organic structures. Scientists currently find further information on many crystallographic structures in the two cured databases Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) and Inorganic Crystal Structure Database (ICSD) which will be currently linked to the common repository, so that users can be directed to the two databases for further information. This step is currently in progress.

The next goal is the generation of a common search interface to provide researchers with easy access to the entire data set of inorganic and organic crystal structures, especially with regard to data mining projects.

As the overlap between inorganic and organic structures increases, the common search interface will offer scientists working at the interface between inorganic and organic chemistry an easier and faster way to find relevant structures.
